Sexual Harassment in America Essay -- Civil Rights Act

According to Websters online dictionary, it is believed that the develop sexual harass handst was coined at Cornell University in 1974 ( informal harassment, 2011). The phrase wasnt, however, sincerely used in common language until the testimony of Anita Hill against Clarence doubting Thomas in 1991. Sexual harassment can take many opposite shapes and forms. According to a Fox News article, the sexual harassment claims make by men have increased twofold in the utmost twenty years (Sexual harassment claims, 2010). Because sexual harassment is misbranded both on a federal and state level in many states, there are steps that an individual and employer should take to observe sexual harassment. On June 19, 1963, chair John F. Kennedy sent an extensive polished Rights statute proposition to Congress (Pre 1965 events, 2011). This proposed legislation faced fierce contrary in Congress. Five days after the assassination of President Kennedy, President Johnson spoke t o Congress and told them that we have spoken of civil rights for too abundant and that it was time to put our countrys words into action. Kennedys legislation faced many legislative struggles that forced changes and compromises to ensure there would be no filibusters in the Senate that would kill the proposal. Despite all of the opposition, President Kennedys proposed polite Rights Act was passed in 1964 and was set into action the following year. The 1964 Civil Rights Act created the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, also know as the EEOC. One of the primary jobs of the EEOC is to uphold the rules and regulations that were laid out by Title seven-spot of the Civil Rights Act.
